A Google Business Profile post has a shelf life. Google shows it in the local 3-pack, on your business card, and in search results for 7–10 days. After that, visibility drops sharply unless your post gets engagement (calls, clicks, saves). Most service businesses post sporadically: a burst of posts in January, then silence, then a flurry in May. Google interprets that as low engagement intent and ranks the profile lower.
The Visibility Decay Curve and Why It Matters
A GBP post has maximum visibility in days 1–3, moderate visibility in days 4–7, and minimal visibility after day 10. If you post every 10 days, your profile stays visible. If you post every 30 days, you have 20 days of invisibility each month.
Google's ranking algorithm favors profiles that show consistent business activity. A weekly post (even a simple one) signals that your business is active. Sporadic posts signal that you've abandoned your profile.
- Days 1–3: High visibility in local search results and 3-pack
- Days 4–7: Visible below the fold, lower engagement
- Days 8–14: Minimal visibility unless the post has strong engagement
- Days 15+: Effectively invisible unless it went viral or has ongoing engagement
Consistency Beats Volume Every Time
One post per week for 12 weeks beats three posts per week for four weeks. The weekly cadence trains Google to expect new content and keeps your profile fresh. The burst approach creates a spike of visibility followed by a 20-day trough.
You don't need Instagram-level creativity. A weekly post can be: a holiday note, a staff photo, a current offer, a customer testimonial, a seasonal service reminder, or a local event tie-in. The format matters less than the rhythm.
Google measures activity, not virality. A boring post every week outranks a brilliant post once a month.
Measure Visibility, Not Just Clicks
GBP posts don't always drive direct clicks. A post about your summer hours might not get clicked, but it keeps your profile visible to people searching "plumber near me" or "dentist hours." Measure success by tracking your 3-pack visibility, not just post performance.
Check your GBP Insights once a week. Look at total views, not just post engagement. A consistent weekly post schedule will show higher profile views even if individual posts don't get clicked.
- Post every Monday or Thursday at the same time each week
- Don't skip more than one week (if you miss a week, post twice the next week)
- Use posts to fill gaps: announce closures, share hours changes, celebrate milestones
- Watch your GBP Insights for 4 weeks; you should see visibility uptick by week 3–4
- Stop if you see visibility drop for two consecutive weeks; audit your content or profile
The Real Cost of Engagement Decay
When you stop posting, your profile becomes invisible and ranks lower for future searches. A competitor with a consistent weekly post will outrank your profile even if their posts are lower quality. Google interprets posting frequency as a signal of business legitimacy.
The fix is mechanical. Set a calendar reminder for the same day each week. Write four weeks of posts in 30 minutes. Schedule them in GBP. Walk away. The consistency will show up in your ranking within 4–6 weeks.
