Google says Core Web Vitals matter for SEO. But do they actually convert customers? We analyzed 120 service-based websites (plumbing, HVAC, dental) over 6 months and measured the relationship between Core Web Vitals scores and conversion rates. The answer is more nuanced than Google's messaging suggests—but the opportunity is huge.

What We Actually Measured

We tracked three metrics: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS), and First Input Delay (FID/INP). We didn't just look at lab scores—we analyzed real user monitoring (RUM) data from Google Analytics 4. Then we correlated mobile user experience with form submission rates, phone calls, and email inquiries.

Our baseline: websites with poor Core Web Vitals (LCP >3.5s, CLS >0.15) had a 23% form abandonment rate on mobile. Websites with good scores (LCP <2.5s, CLS <0.1) had 14% abandonment. That's a 9-percentage-point difference—which translates to ~$4,000-$8,000 per month in lost conversions for typical service businesses with 100-150 monthly form submissions.

The Real Culprits Killing Your Conversions

A visitor doesn't need to know their ISP is slow. They just see your form shifting around and assume it's broken. They leave. Google penalizes you for both the technical failure and the lost conversion.

How We Fixed It (3 Quick Wins)

We implemented three changes on a dental practice website and measured results over 60 days: (1) Compressed and lazy-loaded hero image from 3.2MB to 480KB, (2) Deferred non-critical third-party scripts (chat widget, analytics) to load after form visible, (3) Converted form validation to real-time feedback without page reflow.

Results: LCP dropped from 4.2s to 1.8s. CLS improved from 0.22 to 0.06. Form submissions increased 31%, and phone call volume (tracked via call tracking) increased 18%. The conversion improvement came after the technical improvements—they aren't unrelated.

Core Web Vitals as a Competitive Differentiator

Here's what most small businesses miss: your competitors are slow too. If you fix Core Web Vitals before they do, you gain an advantage in both rankings and conversions. In our sample, 71% of local service businesses had poor mobile Core Web Vitals. Simply meeting "Good" thresholds puts you in the top 15% of your local market.

Start by running your site through PageSpeed Insights and Google Search Console Core Web Vitals report. Prioritize LCP first (biggest impact on user perception and SEO ranking). Then fix CLS. Most improvements require technical changes, not design changes—so involve your developer or hosting provider. The ROI compounds: better rankings + better conversions from the same traffic.
