A restaurant client was running standard Meta ads driving traffic to an online reservation page, with a conversion rate that was fine but unremarkable. When we tested a click-to-WhatsApp version of the same offer — same audience, same creative, but the button opened a WhatsApp conversation instead of a web page — the volume of actual inquiries went up noticeably, because a lot of the audience simply preferred sending a message over filling out a form, especially on mobile where switching to a booking form feels like more friction than staying inside an app they're already using.

What a click-to-WhatsApp ad actually does

A click-to-WhatsApp ad is a standard Meta ad — it can run on Facebook, Instagram, or both — with its call-to-action button set to open a WhatsApp conversation with the business instead of a website. When someone taps the ad, WhatsApp opens with a pre-filled message (configurable by the advertiser) already in the text field, so the person just has to hit send rather than compose a message from scratch. From the business side, that message arrives in whatever WhatsApp inbox the business uses — the WhatsApp Business app for smaller operations, or an integrated system for higher volume.

Setting one up

  1. Confirm the Facebook Page is linked to a WhatsApp Business account inside Meta Business Suite — this connection has to exist before the ad objective becomes available.
  2. Choose the ad objective that supports WhatsApp as a destination (Meta's objective names shift over time, but the option is generally under engagement or messages).
  3. Set the destination to WhatsApp and write the pre-filled message customers will see when the conversation opens — this should reflect the specific offer in the ad, not a generic greeting.
  4. Build the ad creative as you would any other ad, keeping message match between the ad's promise and the pre-filled WhatsApp message tight, following the same logic that applies to matching an ad to any landing page.

Why these ads sometimes outperform a landing page click

The operational side these ads require

Click-to-WhatsApp ads shift the bottleneck from ad performance to response capacity — every click that converts into a message needs a timely reply, and a slow response undoes the advantage the format offers. Businesses running these ads at any real volume need either dedicated staff monitoring the WhatsApp inbox during business hours or an automated first-response message that sets expectations while a human catches up, the same discipline that applies to any inbound lead channel.

A click-to-WhatsApp ad trades the patience of a form submission for the immediacy of a live conversation — and immediacy only pays off if someone's actually there to answer.

Measuring performance correctly

Meta's ad reporting can show the number of messaging conversations started from an ad, but converting that into an accurate cost-per-lead or cost-per-booking figure requires tracking what happens after the message is sent — whether it turned into a real inquiry, a booking, or a dead end — which usually means logging WhatsApp leads into the same CRM used for other channels rather than treating WhatsApp conversations as a separate, untracked silo.

Where this fits for different business types

Click-to-WhatsApp performs particularly well for businesses with a naturally conversational sales process — restaurants taking reservations or catering inquiries, home services companies fielding quote requests, real estate agents answering property questions — where a quick back-and-forth genuinely serves the prospect better than a static form. For every WhatsApp entry point we build or recommend, including ad destinations, we route through a consistent contact page rather than a raw link — see our WhatsApp page for how we structure that on our own site.
