When someone wants to know how their website is doing, three free options show up first: ask an AI chatbot, run a free Google/SEO tool, or run our audit. They are not the same thing. Here's exactly what each one can and can't do — with no invented numbers, just what each tool actually measures.
Option 1: Ask ChatGPT (or Gemini, or Claude) directly
Paste your URL into a chat and ask for feedback, and you'll get an answer — confidently written, and often wrong in specific ways. In a normal chat session, the model isn't fetching your live page, running a real PageSpeed test, or checking a real search index. It's pattern-matching against what similar sites usually look like and whatever text you happened to paste in. Ask twice, phrase it differently, and you can get two different answers about the identical site.
And there's one thing it structurally cannot check: whether AI assistants actually recommend your business. Asking a model to grade itself on whether it would cite you isn't a real test — it isn't searching the web when you ask it directly, so it can't tell you who a real buyer's AI search would surface instead of you.
Option 2: Free Google & SEO tools
Tools like Google PageSpeed Insights are real and useful — we use the same PageSpeed Insights API ourselves for our mobile-speed check. The catch is scope: each free tool measures one slice. PageSpeed measures speed. A generic SEO checker measures on-page SEO. Neither tells you whether your Google Business Profile is linked, whether your schema markup is complete, whether you have a working lead-capture form, or whether AI assistants cite you. To get a full picture the DIY way, you'd need to run five or six different free tools, none of which talk to each other or compare you against a benchmark for businesses like yours.
Option 3: NetWebMedia's free audit
One click, and it fetches your live site right now — the same page a real visitor sees — and scores 16 dimensions in a single report: AI search visibility (AEO), mobile speed (real PageSpeed Insights), schema markup, lead capture, review management, WhatsApp integration, mobile conversion, automation, analytics, social presence, content depth, branding, reputation, Google Business Profile, crawlability (including whether AI crawlers can actually read your site), and trust/compliance. Every score is compared against a real SMB benchmark, not an arbitrary number.
The part no free tool or chatbot can do: we read what your business actually sells from your own homepage, generate the searches a real buyer would type, and run those live through Claude with real web search enabled — the same way a buyer's AI-powered search actually works. The report shows who gets recommended, you or a competitor, and the reason given. That's a measurement, not a guess.
Side by side
| What it checks | Ask ChatGPT | Google / free SEO tools | NetWebMedia free audit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fetches your real, live site | No — answers from general knowledge | Yes, for the one thing that tool checks | Yes, for all 16 dimensions |
| Real Google search-results check | No | Rarely (paid tools only) | Yes |
| Tests whether AI assistants recommend you | Can't test itself objectively | No | Yes — live sample, names who's cited instead |
| Checks whether AI crawlers can read your site (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot blocked in robots.txt, or content that only appears with JavaScript) | Only if you know to ask and paste in the files | Rarely — most check Googlebot only | Yes — names each blocked AI engine and counts the words they actually see |
| Business-specific (reads what you sell) | Only if you prompt it exactly right | No — generic keyword lists | Yes — generated from your homepage automatically |
| Google Business Profile, WhatsApp, reviews, lead capture — all in one report | No | No — one tool per topic | Yes |
| Benchmarked against real SMB averages | No | No | Yes |
| Downloadable branded PDF | No | Sometimes | Yes |
| Time to a full picture | Depends how well you prompt it | 5-6 separate tools, manually | ~1 minute, one report |
It's not just ChatGPT and Google — here's the rest of the field
A handful of SaaS tools and agencies also open with a "free audit" pitch. We checked what each one actually measures, straight from their own pricing and product pages — no invented numbers, and we're citing our sources.
| Tool / agency | What it checks | Price | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vendasta Snapshot Report | Website performance + local listings, packaged for agency resale | $99–$1,279/mo platform | Each report still costs $2 — never actually free, even on paid plans |
| HubSpot Website Grader | Performance, mobile-friendliness, basic on-page SEO, HTTPS | Free | No AI-search visibility, no social, no local listings |
| WooRank | SEO and technical site checks | Free version limited; full review needs Pro ($79/mo)+ | The real depth sits behind the paywall, not the free tier |
| SEMrush Site Audit | 140+ technical/on-page SEO checks | Free tier caps at 100 pages; full plans from $139.95/mo | Pure technical SEO — no social, no local, no AEO/AI-search |
| BrightLocal | Local listings accuracy and NAP consistency | From $39/mo | Local-only — no performance, security, or AEO coverage |
| Ignite Visibility (agency) | SEO, performance, security, and "AI presence" | Free | The only one that names AI visibility — but delivered by email in 3–5 business days, not instantly |
| Thrive Score (agency) | 150+ SEO factors, instant score | Free | Doesn't publish coverage of social presence or AI-search visibility |
Pricing and scope checked directly against each company's own site and pricing page, September 2026 — figures can change on their end after that. Sources: vendasta.com, capterra.com, website.grader.com, getapp.com, seoptimer.com, brightlocal.com, explodingtopics.com, ignitevisibility.com, thrivesearch.com.
Across all of them, two gaps repeat: not one publicly covers social media presence the way our audit does, and only Ignite Visibility even claims to check AI-search visibility — and theirs takes days, not about a minute. That combination, full technical/SEO/security coverage plus social presence plus live AI-citation testing, delivered instantly and for free, is what the 16-dimension audit does that we could not find anywhere else.
Frequently asked
Can't I just ask ChatGPT to audit my website?
You can ask, but it can't check. It doesn't fetch your live site, doesn't run a real PageSpeed test, and doesn't know whether your Google Business Profile is linked — it answers from general knowledge and whatever you paste in, and it can sound confident while being wrong. Our audit fetches your actual site right now and runs the same 16 measurements the same way every time.
Isn't Google PageSpeed Insights free too?
Yes — we actually use the same PageSpeed Insights API for our mobile-speed dimension. But that's 1 of the 16 things we measure. It won't tell you if AI assistants recommend a competitor over you, or whether your schema is complete.
What is "AI citation sampling" and why does it matter?
It's the one thing neither ChatGPT nor Google can tell you about themselves: whether an AI assistant, searching the web the way a real customer's AI-powered search does, actually recommends your business. We run live buyer-intent searches through Claude with real web search enabled and report who gets cited — you, or your competitors, and why.
Is it really free?
Yes. No login, no credit card, results in about a minute. It's the same engine behind our paid client reports.

Free, no login, results in about a minute — including who AI recommends instead of you.
